Parrot Releases Drone Package for Real Estate and Building Professionals

Why you should expect more commercial offerings from Parrot

March 17, 2017

Parrot
Parrot, a drone manufacturer that’s been struggling with consumer drone sales, announced a drone package aimed at real estate and building professionals.  The Parrot Bebop-Pro 3D Modeling bundle allows users to capture measurements, videos, 3D models, and more.

This new offering comes after the January announcement that Parrot would be laying off one-third ― about 290 people ― of its drone-related work force after unsatisfactory fourth quarter profits in its drone sector.

The company pointed out that the margins of consumer drones were so low that it wouldn’t be able to “deliver profitable growth for this business over the medium and long term.” It's not clear why Parrot doesn't believe it can improve margins with its consumer drones, although the likely culprit is industry leader DJI, which has put pressure on other consumer drone companies with a steady stream of new products.

Parrot hopes to return to profitability by 2018 by expanding its commercial drone business, Chief Financial Officer Gilles Labossiere told Reuters. It's important to point out that Parrot owns commercial drone manufacturer senseFly, which recently received permission to fly its eBee drones BVLOS anytime in Switzerland. Given the current competitive landscape and Parrot's ties to the commercial sphere, it’s safe to expect more commercial offerings from the company throughout 2017.

While the Bebop-Pro 3D Modeling bundle isn't Parrot's first foray into real estate — it launched the Bebop 2 Real Estate Edition in December 2016 ― this is its most comprehensive real estate offering to date.

The Parrot Bebop-Pro 3D Modeling bundle comes with:
  • Parrot Bebop 2
  • Parrot Skycontroller 2
  • 3 batteries
  • Pix4Dmodel license for one year (Cloud and desktop)
  • Parrot Bebop 2 backpack
The package costs $1,099 and will be available to purchase online and at retailers this May.
