FAA Releases Drone Owner Location Database

See how many drone owners are registered where you live

May 18, 2016

On May 18, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a database that shows the number of registered drone users in each U.S. city, with larger cities broken down by zip code.

This release of information was sparked by a large number of Freedom of Information Act requests submitted since the December 2015 online registration began. The database excludes names and street addresses because this information is exempt from the FOIA.

According to a press release, the FAA decided to only post the city, state, and zip code of registered drone users because many are either hobbyist users or minors. The FAA also notes that name and addresses are only available by searching the unique registration number issued when becoming a registered drone owner.

The FAA said in a statement that it believes that the privacy interest in withholding names and addresses trumps any public interest in having the information openly available.

Drone owners are required to register any unmanned aerial vehicle that weighs between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds.

You can search the registration data here to see how many registered drone owners are in your area.
